Loofah Plant

Despite this horrid heat we are having the Loofah seem to be doing just fine. I have noticed a few dry leaves on the bottom of the plants but that is fairly normal. We continue to watch them as they climb and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their blooms.

I find it very interesting how the plant knows when it can grab onto something and how it will wrap itself around a support quite tightly. I know the above picture is a bit blurry but hopefully you can see where this vine has grabbed ahold of the arch and wrapped around it several times.

In this picture you can see where the vine has attached itself to the arch. One time was not good enough, this part of the vine has wrapped around the arch in three separate locations.

When the vine starts producing this type of attachment will be a good thing. The gourds become quite heavy before they start to dry out. This support system is necessary to keep the gourds from ripping the vine apart.
